The Rotary Foundation, its Mission and its Focus

There are many ways to support the work of Rotary. One is by contributing to the Rotary Foundation.

Do you know what the mission of The Rotary Foundation is? Are you aware that The Rotary Foundation has six Areas of Focus?

The mission of the Rotary Foundation is straightforward: According to the Rotary website, “the mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.” The Rotary Foundation gets its funds from voluntary donations.

The Six Areas of Focus are:

1. Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
2. Disease prevention and treatment
3. Water and sanitation
4. Maternal and child health
5. Basic education and literacy
6. Economic and community development.

As the website puts it, “These areas reflect critical humanitarian issues and needs that Rotarians are addressing worldwide. They will align Rotary with other international development efforts and will strategically further the Foundation's mission.”

Our joint project with the Rotary Club of Fortaleza Planalto, completed just over a year ago, fit within at least two of these categories. By making transporation possible for impoverished families, so they can obtain necessary treatments for juvenile cancer patients, it “improv[ed] the capacity of local health care professionals” while “enhancing the health infrastructure of local communities,” under Area of Focus 2. And, by bringing adults in those families to a place to get vocational training, it helped “develop[] opportunities for decent and productive work,” under Area of Focus 6.

The Rotary Club of Edmond is a Sustaining Club: Every Edmond Rotarian donates $100 every year to The Rotary Foundation, which does so much to help so many throughout the world. Thank you for your support of The Rotary Foundation.
