 Service Above Self

Last week’s meeting was amazing. If you weren’t there, you missed hearing of the many ways the Rotary Club of Edmond puts its Motto, Service Above Self, into action. In her farewell address, Past President Gail Carr translated what our Club does into numbers. I don’t remember all the statistics – she went through so many so quickly, it was hard to keep up. But here are a few.

We have 112 members, which is up slightly from last year. Over the course of the Rotary year, 70 of our members donated 1,564 hours on specific Rotary Club of Edmond projects. And those numbers don’t include all of the directors, officers and committee members and their hours.

Last year, members of the Rotary Club of Edmond pledged, committed or raised over $25,000 for Club projects. We purchased four ShelterBoxes, and donated an additional $400 to the New Zealand relief effort. The Club donated 75 books to Ida Freeman Elementary School, together with 20 books on tape and three CD players.

The Rotary Club of Edmond sponsored five students to attend RYLA. We also had two Ambassadorial Scholars. With the leadership of our Club, eight students started an Interact Club at Edmond Santa Fe High School.

These data represent only a small portion of the things Past President Gail described for us last week. And they don’t tell the complete story of the Rotary Club of Edmond. For what anyone who has had the privilege of serving as our president can say is that Edmond Rotarians give so much to so many, both through Rotary and otherwise. Thank you for making our Rotary Motto a reality.

The Rotary Club of Edmond Hosts Dr. Thomas Showalter

Our guest speaker this week is Thomas Showalter, III, a board certified medical oncologist who practices at the new INTEGRIS Cancer Institute, Proton Campus.  Dr. Showalter received his medical degree from Oklahoma State University and completed his residency in internal medicine and fellowship in hematology/oncology at Scott and White Memorial Hospital. Dr. Showalter will speak about early cancer detection.

Please welcome Dr. Thomas Showalter to the Rotary Club of Edmond.

Andy
